چکیده

This paper considers the notorious Double Nominative Constructions (DNCs) found in Korean, and argues that these constructions are derived from a locative construction. Based on Freeze (1992) and Perlmutter (1978), I will show that the derivation in Korean DNCs is the same as that found in English possessive, existential and locative sentences (see Fillmore (1968), Kuno (1971) and Lyons (1967) for details). The DNCs seem to have a relationship with the following three kinds of structures: first, possessive constructions, second, locative existential constructions, and third, ergative constructions, as exemplified below:

Double Subject, Double Nominative Object and Double Accusative Object Constructions in Japanese and Korean

This paper presents a unified account of three kinds of constructions in which more than one NP can show up with the same case in simple sentences in Japanese and Korean: double subject, double nominative object and double accusative constructions. Noting that the second NPs in these constructions are functional or relational, this paper proposes to assign them the category and type different f...

Treating Multiple-Subject Constructions in a Constraint-Based MT-System

In Korean and Japanese some sentences are to be found which contain more than one nominative-NP. Such constructions are called ‘multiple-subject constructions’ or ‘double-subject constructions’. They do not only raise a question about their syntactic and semantic nature but also cause such problems as structural changes in MT. They must be considered in designing an MT-System between two typolo...

Non-nominative (major) Subjects and Case Stacking in Korean*

Non-nominative Subject Constructions (NNSCs, hereafter) in Korean have been investigated from a variety of perspectives (Gerdts & Youn 1988, 1999; Youn 1990, 1998; Y-J Kim 1990; KS Hong 1991; Yoon 1996, inter alia). Not surprisingly, the constructions exhibit a number of properties that are found across a wide spectrum of languages that have been claimed to possess NNSCs. In particular, most pr...

A Constraint-Based Approach to Some Multiple Nominative Constructions in Korean

The so-called multiple nominative constructions (MNC) have been one of the puzzling phenomena in topic-prominent languages like Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. This paper first investigates the basic syntactic properties of three MNCs and then provides a constraint-based analysis within the theory of HPSG (Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar). The analysis presented here is lead-driven' and 'co...

Licensing Nominals in the Multiple Nominative Constructions in Korean: A Mereological Perspective

This paper investigates some important constraints on the licensing of nominals in the so-called Multiple Nominative Constructions (MNCs) in Korean from a mereological point of view, proposing a semantic relation hierarchy. The main idea advanced in this paper is that MNCs are cyclically formed only when the relationship between the two consecutive NPs satisfies one of the conceptual constraint...
